Families fight wrongful death law
“Families have a right but no remedy to pursue answers in a wrongful death. A right without a remedy is no right at all.” — Don Renaud, Burnaby personal injury lawyer, quoted in The Province
Grieving relatives of people killed by wrongful death want changes to an aging law that denies them the right to sue for damages. Under the current Family Compensation Act in BC, financial compensation is only awarded if the deceased was a breadwinner, effectively barring relatives of children, the elderly and severely disabled access to justice. Members of the Wrongful Death Law Reform Group, including co-founder lawyer Don Renaud, will be rallying at the Vancouver Art Gallery today.
